10 surprising statistics that show how much you can expect to spend during your lifetime
Life can be long and costly, especially if you have kids, pets or enjoy activities that require a certain level of income. So we've put together some statistics to show you how much you're likely to spend during your lifetime, whether it's college fees for your children, the cost of your dream wedding or maybe even a subsequent divorce.
But be warned - you're going to blown away by how much we spend on the little things in life: toilet paper, female sanitary products...
1. $6,005 per year, per child
This statistic is based on the fact that kids are minors until they're 18, so we're talking about baby products right through to the end of high school. At $6,005 a year each, it shows that having kids requires a substantial investment!

2. $85 a year on toilet paper
Okay, so we're talking expensive toilet paper - cheaper brands will cost under 20 bucks a year. That said, if you like your four-ply and live until you're 80 you may end up spending around $6,800 during your lifetime just to keep your private parts clean!
3. $23,500 for female sanitary products
Mother Nature's given women a tough deal when it comes to periods. Belly aches and bleeding is bad enough, without thinking of the considerable cost of buying tampons and sanitary towels every month.

4. The average cost of a wedding is $13,000
Celebrity weddings aside, it'll cost you over $10,000 to walk down the aisle - wedding dress, rings, flowers, decorations, the meal, not to mention the number of guests, so better start saving early on and choose wisely if you don't want to be faced with a divorce further down the line!
5. And if you do part ways, be prepared to pay your divorce lawyer between $1,000 and $8,000
Amicable divorces are cheaper, particularly if you use the same lawyer and can split the bill. However, if things have turned sour or if there are issues over property division or childcare, then you'll need to dig deep into your pocket!

6. Ever wondered how much the average woman spends on shoes during her lifetime?
$40,000! Yes, you read it right. Women buy an average of 11 pairs of shoes a year, which according to a British study works out at $40,000 during their lifetime!
7. Between $500 and over $6,000 if you're a smoker.
This obviously depends on how many cigarettes you smoke a day, but it goes to show that as well as being bad for your health, smoking is also bad for your wallet. And that's not taking into account the cost of medical care if you suffer from a smoking-related illness!

8. Women spend more than men
You may not be surprised by this statistic, but you should also bear in mind that women tend to earn less than their male colleagues and need to spend money on certain essential items - see No.3 on this list.
9. The average monthly cost of food per household is $400
This budget is based on a family of 3, who eat seasonal produce. Exactly how much you spend depends on the number of people in your household, how much the breadwinners earn, whether you cook or are a fast food fan, suffer from intolerances or allergies etc.
