13 examples that show our kindness to animals
Man has taken over the planet and continues to cover it with concrete with the help of cities, highways and buildings, increasingly reducing places where animals can live safely. To correct this, or at least to facilitate cohabitation between us and them, some organizations have gotten to work, building things that benefit animals for once. It’s a sign that humanity is gradually starting to live up to its name.
1. Bridges that allow forest animals to cross Canada's highways
These bridges were created to try to reduce car accidents caused by deer crossing the highway and allow animals to travel around their forest home safely. They even went as far as covering the bridges with vegetation to reproduce the animals’ natural habitat.
2. Hummingbird feeders in Georgia
These hummingbird feeders are painted red, because this color attracts birds who think it’s nectar. Bird lovers everywhere put feeders full of seeds in their yards to attract birds. Each bird species prefers a particular food, so people can choose the type of bird that comes to his yard.
3. Turtle tunnels on Honshu Island, Japan
The trains on this island were killing off the turtles that wanted to cross the tracks, so the railway company built a special tunnel under the rails to allow them to cross safely.
4. Apartment complexes for birds in London’s parks
This project, initiated by Bruce Gilchrist and Jo Joelson to encourage the multidisciplinary collaboration of artists, led to the construction of apartment complexes for birds in several parts of London. The birds find a chic home, and the artists attract the public to lesser-known parks. The organization’s goal was also to show that everything is connected: architecture, ecology, landscaping, and society (so the style of the apartments was meant to reflect the social dwellings built in the 1960s in these neighborhoods).
5. A tunnel under the highway in Finland
Similar to the Canadian bridges, these are built under the highway.
6. A vending machine that feeds stray animals for free
The Turkish company Pugedon markets these interesting machines in China. Residents bring their empty bottles to recycle, and in exchange for each bottle, the vending machine gives 20 g of food to a stray animal in the neighborhood.
7. An airport for birds in Vilnius
This type of sign was introduced in Vilnius to remind humans that the land doesn’t just belong to them. For example, this park is also an "airport for the birds," so birds have the right to land and take off, just as people have the right to walk there.
8. A bridge that helps crabs migrate in Australia
Thousands of red crabs migrate to Christmas Island, which is unfortunately (for them) crossed by a road. To prevent the crustaceans from getting crushed by the thousands, this bridge was built in a strategic location.
9. A crosswalk for hedgehogs in Lithuania
Here’s a nice symbolic ecologist project in Lithuania, where pedestrian crosswalks were drawn on the roads next to a sign showing a hedgehog running across. It’s a reminder that cars should also pay attention to the animals.
10. An elephant swimming pool in a Japanese safari park
For the elephants of Mount Fuji to swim and bathe, this safari park built a giant swimming pool.
11. Caboodle Ranch in Florida
This unique ranch in Florida allows 500 cats to live in a real 40-acre town built to their size. They take up residence and walk around the houses, but also there’s also a city hall, mills, etc... all that a real city can offer.
12. Duck towpaths in Great Britain
The foundation that manages the inland waterways of England and Wales had the idea of ??creating towpaths for the British ducks who like to walk around the lakes. A white line and silhouettes of ducks remind humans to protect nature.
13. A dog parking lot
In a German IKEA, there is this luxury parking lot for dogs, allowing their owners to bring them inside and not leave them locked in the car.
