18 cool inventions that you’ll only find in Japan
The Japanese are way ahead of us when it comes to technology and gadgets.
Sure, some of their ideas are a bit weird or even scary, but others are nothing short of genius. Don’t forget it’s thanks to them that we have selfie sticks!
To keep you up to speed with their latest inventions, here are 18 Japanese-designed products that we hope will hit our shores!
1. Swivel seats in trains
These swivel seats can turn 360° - great if you’re traveling with friends and family or want to avoid motion sickness.
2. A motorbike helmet with a hole for your ponytail
The world needs this and the Japanese came up with the goods. A practical, comfy option for ponytail fans.
3. Baby seats in public restrooms
It’s not easy when you’re out alone with your baby and the urge to go to bathroom hits. Thanks to these baby seats, you can do the deed without having to juggle or worry about your child.
4. Drink your coffee with a cuddly toy
Kiss goodbye to drinking coffee alone by sharing your table with a giant soft toy.

Crosswalks are a useful invention but unless you jaywalk, you may need to cross a few to reach the right block. The Japanese have found a solution – diagonal crosswalks so you can get from A to B in one straight line.
6. Adjustable tablet stand
Go hands-free wherever you like with this practical tablet stand.
7. Sunglasses for dogs
The Japanese like to protect their pooches from the sun (as we all do) and came up with sunglasses specially designed for man’s best friend.

If you enjoy singing out loud, but feel a bit shy or don’t want to disturb others, then invest in a microphone that’ll muffle your voice, so only you can hear your dulcet tones!
9. Toilet slippers
The Japanese are obsessed with hygiene and bathrooms are the dirtiest rooms. To avoiding spreading germs around the house, they slip on a pair of toilet slippers. Just make sure you don’t forget!
10. Cushion so you can work lying down
If you want to lie down to work or play video games, but don’t want achy wrists, then this cushion’s for you. Just be aware that curving your spine could quickly give you back ache.
11. These homes have the owner/occupier’s name on the wall
Finding someone’s home in Japan can be a challenge – streets rarely have names and house numbers refer to the date they were built. Thankfully, the owner/occupant’s name is written on the wall – a (slightly) simpler way to help you find the right door!
12. A bathroom sink above the toilet’s tank
Help save water with this sink meets flush combo. Water comes from the faucet and once you’ve washed your hands, it flows into the tank so you can flush the toilet!

The Japanese do most things whilst sitting on the floor: watching TV, eating, working… So they’ve come up with intelligent mats that can be adapted to any task.
