7 stunning destinations that are a step back in time
Some countries seem stuck in the 60s or 70s, but that's not a bad thing! The digital age has barely arrived and overconsumption is an alien concept. Don't believe us? Here are 7 stunning destinations that'll take you back in time.
Old cars, hammocks swinging on terraces, music being played on the sidewalk, friendly people enjoying the simple things in life - a far cry from the modern, urban frenzy of most cities and a breath of fresh air for anyone who misses times gone by.
1. Luang Prabang in Laos
Luang Prabang is a magnificent town that harks back to French colonial times, with beautiful wood and stone buildings and streets lined with vintage cars. Add to that palm trees scattered around town and colorful houses that brighten up the city's neighborhoods.
2. Bucharest in Romania
Bucharest is a really friendly city. People love having a chat and enjoy life outdoors as much as they can in city that's filled with parks and squares. The buildings are quite austere - a fascinating reminder of life in the 70s and 80s, before the collapse of the Eastern Bloc.
3. Prague in the Czech Republic
Despite WW2 and a devastating civil war, Prague has managed to stay intact and is a great destination for history-lovers. This fascinating and charming city is littered with religious monuments that fill its streets, squares and parks.
4. Alsisar in India
This town was a favorite vacation destination with Maharajahs and is now home to only 300 people alongside numerous temples and palaces. Cars are banned, the streets are dirt tracks and there are more cows than stores. Interestingly, every December the town hosts the Magnetic Fields Festival - an electro music festival that combines contemporary culture with Rajasthani hospitality!
5. Tombstone in the USA
Tombstone in Arizona is a former Wild West town and home to the famous O.K. Corral, scene of a shootout that's since gone down in history. This small town is as far away from city life as you can get and ghost-hunting fans will love the bullet-riddled Old Cage Theater! If you fancy a taste of cowboy life, then this one's for you!
6. Hahoe in South Korea
This is a folklore village and one of many to be found in South Korea. Age-old customs are still respected and you'll find typical 16th Century buildings and people in traditional costumes - a way to ensure that this high-tech country doesn't lose touch with its amazing past!
7. Si Phan Don in Laos
Also called 4,000 islands, this beautiful destination is in southern Laos and only accessible by dug-out canoe. Don Det is known as a hippie hang-out, but life throughout the region is quiet and laid back - perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy some calm in a culturally-rich setting.
