He starts each day's lessons by complimenting his students one at a time... Here's why:
The special needs teacher, Chris Ulmer, teaches students with disabilities in the city of Jacksonville, Florida. Some of his students are autistic, or suffer from traumatic brain injuries, speech apraxia, or Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC).
Chris starts each day's class by dedicating 10 minutes to compliment each of his students individually. This is the type of conversation he continually has with each of his students: 'I love having you in my class. I think you're very funny. You're a great soccer player. Everyone in here loves you...'
This type of words helps his students feel better and have more confidence in themselves.
'These simple little daily reminders of their qualities redirect the students' attention. They forget about what they can't do, and focus on what they can do,' states Ulmer.
Little by little, the students began complimenting each other and their teacher.
Chris has written a book, in which he tells the story of his class. But unfortunately, his book hasn't been accepted by any publishing houses.
He wrote on his Facebook page: 'Ignorance of those who can't understand these kids is normal, and gets a free pass. But there is no excuse for a lack of empathy.'
Here's a video showing the daily routine of the teacher and his students:
